The Brain, Magnesium and Mental Health
During my 40 years of neuroscience research at MIT and other leading institutions, my team discovered that magnesium ions are critical regulators of synaptic density and brain plasticity. Our research revealed that elevated brain magnesium enhances learning and memory, prevents age-related cognitive decline, and reduces anxiety. However, conventional magnesium compounds have poor brain bioavailability. This led us to develop Magnesium L-threonate (Magtein®), the only magnesium compound proven to effectively cross the blood-brain barrier and elevate brain magnesium levels. Human clinical trials demonstrate that Magtein® significantly improves cognitive function in older adults, effectively reversing approximately nine years of age-related cognitive decline. For your patients seeking evidence-based brain health solutions, Magtein® represents the culmination of decades of rigorous scientific research translated into a clinically-validated therapeutic intervention.
Learning Objectives:
- The critical role of brain magnesium for mental health
- The uniqueness of Magtein in elevating brain magnesium
- The health benefits of Magtein

Mitochondria, Microglia, and the Gut-Brain Axis: A Functional Framework for Neuro-Longevity
Mitochondrial dysfunction and gut-brain axis disruption are increasingly recognized as foundational drivers of neuroinflammation, microglial dysregulation, and the accelerated trajectory toward cognitive decline, mental illness, and neurodegeneration. In this session, Brendan Vermeire, Founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute and creator of the Functional Mental Health Practitioner™ (FMHP) model, will explore how impaired mitochondrial bioenergetics and gut dysbiosis synergize to fuel neuro-immunosenescence, inflammaging, and vulnerability to psychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions.
This presentation will map out a clinically actionable framework for identifying and addressing these multidimensional dysfunctions, with a specific emphasis on the role of microglial activation in mental health disorders. Brendan will also highlight targeted nutraceutical strategies for restoring mitochondrial function, enhancing gut-brain communication, and building long-term neuro-resilience, featuring evidence-backed interventions from Researched Nutritionals’ clinical product line.
Attendees will leave equipped with a cutting-edge understanding of the mitochondria–microglia–microbiome connection and empowered with practical protocols for functional mental health care.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the bidirectional relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and gut-brain axis disruption in the context of mental health and neurodegeneration.
- Describe how mitochondrial stress influences microglial activation, neuroinflammation, and blood-brain barrier permeability.
- Identify key lifestyle and nutraceutical interventions that support mitochondrial resilience, redox balance, and gut-brain communication.

Unlocking the Gut-Brain Axis: Integrative Strategies for Enhancing Mental Health Outcomes
Mental health research has advanced significantly over the last decade, uncovering critical root-cause pathologies like infections, toxicity, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Yet, despite these exciting discoveries, mental health statistics and outcomes do not reflect these advances, and continue to be concerning. As the integrative and functional communities work to bridge this gap, it is beneficial to explore and offer accessible and efficacious strategies for better diagnosis and treatment of mental illness from a root cause perspective.
The gut-brain axis represents a complex and bidirectional communication network between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Emerging research highlights the significant role of the gut-brain axis in influencing mental health, with implications for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. This talk will explore how gut dysbiosis, inflammation, and immune dysfunction promote gut-brain dysregulation, further impacting mental health. We will discuss how incorporating integrative and widely available tools can enhance treatment progress and outcomes. This talk aims to address why targeting gut-brain signaling and disrupting inflammation are crucial components of comprehensive mental healthcare.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify Key Mental Health Factors: Recognize the role of inflammation, gut dysbiosis, and immune dysfunction in the pathophysiology of mental health disorders.
- Explore Integrative Gut-Brain Strategies: Learn about research-backed interventions such as specialized pre-resolving mediators and psychobiotics.
- Clinical Application: Assess the practical implementation of gut-brain axis interventions in clinical settings to improve patient outcomes.

Beyond Misdiagnosis: The Critical Role of Integrative Medicine in Complex Mental Health and Chronic Disease
This presentation explores how siloed medical systems contribute to the misdiagnosis of psychiatric disorders when the root cause is actually often a missed complex medical condition. Through real-world case studies and evidence-based strategies, Dr. Flowers highlights how conditions like autoimmune encephalitis, gliomas, endocrine disorders, and chronic infections are mistaken for depression, psychosis, or bipolar disorder through practicing innovative precision solutions in a 360° total life approach. He introduces a collaborative integrative model that brings together psychiatry, primary care, nutrition, and complementary modalities to improve diagnostic accuracy and long-term outcomes by getting to the root cause, not just presenting issues. Attendees will gain tools to implement team-based approaches that address both integrative mental health, and physical health holistically, reduce healthcare fragmentation, and significantly improve patient care.
Learning Objectives:
- Distinguish between at least six medical conditions commonly misdiagnosed as psychiatric disorders, including Lyme disease, gliomas, autoimmune encephalitis, and hypothyroidism, by identifying their core clinical red flags and appropriate diagnostic tools.
- Define and describe the core components of an integrative, collaborative care model, including at least four distinct roles across medical, psychiatric, and allied health disciplines, and explain how these improve health outcomes in complex cases.
- Apply at least three non-pharmacological, evidence-based treatment modalities—such as somatic therapy, nutrition, and mind-body practices—in the management of patients with chronic pain and co-occurring mental health conditions.
- Identify three measurable outcome domains (e.g., reduction in pain scores, improved mood, increased function) used to track patient progress across integrative treatment programs for chronic disease and psychiatric comorbidity.

Mitochondria are a Critical Component in Integrative Medicine
Integrative medicine, an evidence-based approach, focuses on optimizing health by addressing the root causes of illness, not just symptoms. Mitochondria are at the root of human health and affected in EVERY human pathology – including mental health. To successfully address mental health, one must improve mitochondrial health. Our research has led to an understanding of how to improve mitochondrial health and function through a natural product as a surrogate to exercise, hitherto the only way known to improve mitochondrial health. Understanding how exercise induces mitochondria biogenesis and identification of this natural product that can mimic it has provided us an opportunity to impact mental health like never before.
Learning Objectives:
- Mitochondria are essential to our health and wellbeing.
- Normal aging (and chronic inflammation) are the result of losing 10-15% of mitochondria every decade, starting in our 20s.
- Chronic inflammation is increasingly recognized as significant in the development and progression of various mental health disorders.
